On August 16, President of the Republic of Abkhazia Raul Khadzhimba travelled to the Akarmara village, Tkuarchal District, to examine archeological findings from the village of Djantukh.

The archeologists showed the Head of State the objects they found – coins, brooches, women's jewelry, and household items.

According to the co-director of the expedition, candidate of historical sciences Alexander Skakov, all the things were found during the excavation of a cemetery in the village of Djantukh.

The President was interested to know which of the findings is the most valuable.

“It is difficult to say. First of all, it is objects made of gold, of course, such as Alexander the Great’s coin of local manufacture. We have already done the analysis, this is all local gold. These are world-class objects”, - said Alexander Skakov.

He stressed that it is one of the biggest cemeteries on the territory of Abkhazia.

According to the co-director of the expedition, Director of the Abkhazian State Museum, archaeologist Arkadiy Djopua, the cemetery belongs to the Bronze Age.

All findings will be given to the Abkhazian State Museum and will be presented in a separate exposition.

“We plan to have a separate exposition and to publish a monograph about the Djantukh cemetery”, - he added.

Besides, the expedition members discovered a synchronous settlement of the early Iron Age, late Bronze Age, and down to antiquity.

“This cemetery existed for more than a thousand years. Here there is a so-called secondary burial. Only Abkhazians and the Adyghe people had this burial tradition. In the academic world, no one will contest the fact that we practiced this type of burial since it is only our people who had this tradition”, - said the co-director of the expedition.

The President pointed out the importance of this work and thanked the archaeologists for their efforts. He stressed that the history of our state is demonstrated through the findings of the archaeologists.

“We have to show our people what we have. These are the findings of great importance”, - said Raul Khadzhimba.

The Djantukh cemetery was discovered by archaeologists in 2005. Since 2006, excavations are carried out from July to August by a joint Abkhazian-Russian expedition.
