President Aslan Bzhaniya gave a speech on the day of the 28th anniversary of the start of the Patriotic War of the People of Abkhazia.
Dear compatriots!
Today we celebrate the Day of Memory of the defenders of the Homeland. 28 years ago, on August 14, 1992, grief came to our peaceful home – the armed forces of the State Council of Georgia invaded Abkhazia. The aggressors hoped to conquer our state in a few days and to break the will to freedom of our people. However, they were wrong. In the first hours of the war, the heroes, defenders of Abkhazia fought back hard. August 14 is a tragic day, yet it also symbolizes the endurance and heroism of our people. The Patriotic War of the People of Abkhazia went on for 413 days and nights. Under the command of the national leader Vladislav Ardzinba, our fighters carried on a bitter struggle for the freedom of Apsny.
On this sad day, we bow our heads before the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the Homeland, the sons and daughters of Abkhazia and the volunteer-fighters. Their heroic deeds will serve future generations as an example of true patriotism and selfless service to the Homeland. Eternal memory to the heroes of the Patriotic War of the People of Abkhazia.
Aslan Bzhaniya
President of the Republic of Abkhazia
