Today, on August 8, President of Abkhazia Aslan Bzhaniya visited the embassy of South Ossetia in Sukhum and honoured the memory of the victims of the events connected to Georgia’s aggression against South Ossetia in August 2008.
“Today we celebrate a tragic date in the history of the brotherly nation of South Ossetia. Twelve years ago, on August 8, 2008, under the cover of the night, Georgian forces invaded the sleeping peaceful Tskhinval. Innocent people died, including children, women and old people”, - said the Head of State.
President of Abkhazia Aslan Bzhaniya commented on the heroism of the defenders of South Ossetia. “On this day, we honour the memory of the heroes who gave their lives for the freedom of their native land. Their heroic deeds will serve future generations as an example of loyalty to the Homeland. Eternal memory for the fighters – liberators”, - said the Head of State.
The date of August 8, 2008, as the President remarked, is both tragic and heroic. “This day symbolizes bravery and courage of the defenders of the Homeland. The sons of South Ossetia did not tremble, they demonstrated miracles of heroism and courage, they fought back hard, defended their nation and their Homeland”, - said the President of Abkhazia.
According to Aslan Bzhaniya: “The events of August 2008 have demonstrated to the entire world that the great Russian Federation does not leave its friends in trouble. Thanks to the decisive and timely actions of the leadership of Russia, the enemy was defeated”, - said Aslan Bzhaniya.
The Head of State looked at the photo exhibition dedicated to the tragic events of August 2008 and left a note in the memory book.
President Aslan Bzhaniya, Vice President Badra Gunba and government officials honoured the memory of the victims of August 2008 events with a minute of silence.
Ambassador of the Republic of South Ossetia in Abkhazia Oleg Botsiyev thanked the President of Abkhazia and the Embassy of the Russian Federation for the support. “In August 2008, a tragedy happened which took the lives of innocent peaceful citizens and Russian peacekeepers who selflessly fulfilled their duty in South Ossetia”, - he said.
“For South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Russia, the date of August 8, 2008, became a symbol of the fight for freedom, courage and mutual help”, - said the Advisor of the Ambassador of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Abkhazia Maksim Litvinov.
